I asked my friend Alisha what her son Carson might prefer for a 4th birthday present - the book
Listen to the Wind or a new game for his Leapster. Alisha said that she would prefer the book but that Carson would probably prefer the game, so maybe I should ask Charles what he wanted to give Carson. This approach hadn't even occurred to me, since we don't usually let democracy reign in the house with our three year old. So, last night, as Charles and I were reading books in his bed, I brought up the subject of a birthday present for Carson. Here's how it went...
Allison: Carson's birthday party is coming up in a couple of weeks, and we need to get him a present. Do you think that Carson would like the book
Listen to the Wind, the one you have about building schools for the children of Korphe, or do you think he might like a new Leapster game like Pet Pals? I don't think he has that one.
Charles: I think maybe we should get him the Cars movie.
Allison: Carson already has the Cars movie, and he also has the Cars game for his Leapster, so what do you think about the book or a new game?
Charles: Does Carson have a fuzzy blanket? ("Fuzzy Blanket" is Charles' most beloved possession - it's an old queen sized blanket that pills off little fuzzies, which you can find all over our house. Charles loves the feeling of Fuzzy Blanket on his skin.)
Allison: Hmmm. I'm not sure if Carson already has a fuzzy blanket, but if he does, do you think he might like a book or a game?
Charles: (pauses for a moment) Why don't we just get him both?
Allison: Well, I guess we can decide later.
